About this experience

Beyond Joshimath, the road follows the Dhauliganga river into the Niti valley, climbing from pine forest into a stark, high landscape that feels closer to Ladakh than to the rest of Garhwal. Niti, the last village, sits just short of the Tibetan border.

The valley is home to the Bhotia communities of Malari, Gamshali and Niti, who still migrate with the seasons. We stay with local families, walk to the cave of Timmersain Mahadev with its natural ice lingam, and spend time in villages that very few travellers ever see.
